The year of the Grenache

2011 in review

It has been quite a year for us in Faugères. It is only our third year in France and we have now produced three vintages of wine, had two children and are selling wine in four countries. It must be something in the water. I have posted a photomentary of our year on facebook. Talking of water it has finally stopped raining here after four weeks straight. The old timers tell us that this used to be normal in the Languedoc so we should be in for another bumper year in 2012. The harvest this year was fantastic. We have just been tasting the wines today, a tough job at 10am but someone has to do it! We are really impressed with our Grenache this year. There are some beautiful dark cherry characters and really lifted fruit. It should blend really well with our Carignan fruit which has performed really well. Besides the quality we also have quantity. All the stars alighned this year so we had a big crop and a steady six weeks of sunshine during harvest. Therefore we picked the grapes when we thought they tasted good not when rain told us to!

Our trip to Australia

Finally, after three and a half years, we are going off to Australia this Christmas. A long overdue trip so that we can introduce our children to the Gordon clan and have a blast with friends in and around Sydney. It will not be all play though as we will be flogging our wine at a couple of tastings in Sydney. The first will be at my old local pub in Surry Hills. I started drinking at the Cricketers Arms in Surry Hills when I first left home in 1989! It has been a favourite pub ever since and I have even worked there for a stint during my University days. Now a good mate of mine, Dom, owns the gaff. We will be doing a tasting there on Thursday the 8th of December from 2pm. We will have all our wines on tasting and then you can sit down and enjoy the best Coopers Pale ale in sydney!
Our second tasting will be at the Ultimo wine centre. I worked here for many a year when I was studying in Australia. Jon Osbeiston is the original and best retailer of French wine in Australia. We will be tasting our wines on Saturday the 10th of December from 12.30-2.30pm.

Our wine in Europe

Domaine la Sarabande is still going really well in Europe. We have just had a really positive review from Jancis Robinson MW. She tasted our wines at the annual Lea & Sandeman tasting in London. Click on the individual wines to see her notes on our wines. Cambridge wine merchants are also doing great things and you can order our wine online. The Irish market is also doing very well for us this year. We have our wines with Redmonds of Ranelagh and with Simon and Emma Tyrrell who run www.winestore.ie. The Tyrrell's are also doing a great job wholesaling our wines throughout the country and getting some great press for us as well.

Anyway we are off to pack and practice our meditation to prepare us for 26 hours in a plane with two boys under 2.5 years! We hope you all have a safe and happy holidays and a great new year.

Paul, Isla, Rory, Peter and Scarba Gordon!
